SS Shieldhall
The Steamship Shieldhall is the largest working steam ship in Britain. A member of the National Historic Fleet she serves as a sea-going tribute to Britain's maritime heritage. As a passenger you too can experience the golden age of steam by booking on an excursion or visiting her in Southampton.
Shieldhall is the last survivor of her type and is generally recognised to be the largest steamship of her type operated entirely by unpaid volunteers. Since 1988, the membership has steadily increased and today stands at over 800 people, worldwide. Shieldhall provides a unique opportunity for the general public of all ages to visit her and see her in action.
To commemorate the Mayflower 400 anniversary, the Shieldhall has launched a new cruise called 'In the Footsteps of The Mayflower'. Spend a day in Southampton - on land and sea - exploring the maritime city's connections with The Mayflower, which departed Southampton with her sister ship The Speedwell on a voyage to the New World.
Visit SeaCity Museum and it's permanent 'Gateway to the World' Gallery, and see how Southampton has developed as a port since Roman times. Learn about the famous ships that have sailed out of Southampton, including The Mayflower, The Titanic and the Queen Mary; take a guided walk with a Southampton Guide through the city's Old Town, visiting Vaults and Towers and hearing about the city's connections with The Pilgrim Fathers, before boarding the SS Shieldhall for a cruise along Southampton Water.
The Shieldhall is the country's oldest passenger-cargo steamship. Your cruise will pass down Southampton Water towards Calshot and the Isle of Wight, retracing the initial route of The Mayflower and The Speedwell some 400 years ago. You are welcome to visit the Engine Room and Boiler Room on Shieldhall and also meet the Captain on the Bridge!.
The guided tour of Southampton’s Old Town lasts approximately one and a half hours and is included in the price of the cruise.
SeaCity Museum is open from 10am daily. We would recommend the day commencing with a visit to SeaCity Museum, followed by the Guided Tour of Southampton’s Old Town, though these can be followed in any order. The day would finish with the SS Shieldhall Cruise.
