Illuminate Rotherhithe is a celebration of this community’s history. Incorporating free events – talks, music and dance, the five-day event takes place across SE16.
Thursday 23 November from 5-6.30pm: Illuminate Rotherhithe Community Lantern Procession.
A celebration of the diversity of communities and a fantastic opportunity for everyone in Rotherhithe to get together. The procession will parade from Mayflower Park creating a spectacular visual with music and the display of lanterns - designed with the help of London Bubble Theatre. Families, friends and visitors will walk together as a joint community.
Thursday 23 November, 7pm: Mayflower Concert at St. Mary’s church.
After the lantern procession, the Mayflower Concert will take place inside the church . The theme of the night is migration. There will be music with the Rotherhithe and Bermondsey Choral Society, folk duo Jimmy Aldridge and Sid Goldsmith, Tricity Vogue. Music, song, poetry and discourse will be shared - with commemorations of the sailing of the Mayflower in 1620 at its heart.
Friday 24th November, 8pm. Songs and Tales of Migration. Sands Film & Cinema.
Songs and Tales of Migration event will be featuring music by the Citizens of the World Choir and speeches by local speakers - inspired by the theme of migration to share stories and facts about the main theme and history related to the Mayflower, Rotherhithe and more.
The choir is to convey its stories of migration, which they will be doing with four solo performances and four songs from their repertoire.
Saturday 25th November, 4pm. Family Ceilidh and Midnight Apothecary
Sunday 26th November, 3pm. Film and discussion 'The Significance of the Mayflower'
Illuminate Rotherhithe continues with the screening of The Pilgrims followed by a discussion chaired by the Rotherhithe and Bermondsey Local History Society about The Significance of The Mayflower at Sands Films Studios.
Film screening starts at 3pm followed by the discussion at 5.30pm. You can join the discussion only, please arrive before 5.30pm. The film is 2 hours long and the discussion is 1 hour.
Monday 27th November, 7pm. Illuminate Rotherhithe Mystery Object Group field trip
The Canada Water Library Mystery Object Group meets around once a month to explore a different artefact from the borough’s collections or with relevance to the history of the area and inspire the creativity of those who attend. The group will go for a field trip to Rotherhithe Picture Research Library where a object from the Cuming Museum will be revealed as part of Illuminate Rotherhithe. Free, no booking required. This event is organised by Southwark Libraries
